Providing free menstrual products to those in need because dignity is essential for everyone
Period Poverty means not being able to afford basic menstrual products like pads or tampons. It affects many people, especially those who are homeless, struggling financially, or in schools and communities where access to these essentials is limited. For those impacted, it can lead to missed school, work, and health challenges, all because they don’t have what they need to manage their periods safely and with dignity.
We are a part of the youth council for the local food pantry, where we help provide food for unhoused locals. Since they were unable to afford much, they prioritized food over hygienic products. We realized that this was a leading factor in the cause of period poverty and wanted to do something about it. We addressed this problem by taking direct action and constructing a social enterprise that provides feminine menstrual products, such as maxi pads and tampons, in a safe, public pantry for underprivileged individuals. Not only does this allow for women to have access to the products, but it also helps raise awareness of the lack of importance that this problem is given. Our project works because we focus on making the products available in the locations where people need them most. We also make sure that these products are constantly replenished at the stands, which allows for them to be accessible. The project does not only represent giving back to the community, but it also focuses on building something innovative that keeps working overtime, helping more people, easing tensions between the homeless and underserved communities and the rest of society, and making a real difference in the world. Through our project, we have been able to help many women, who have been very appreciative and also fix the broken equilibrium where people don’t help the underprivileged unless the situation affects them personally.
Our mission is to ensure everyone has access to essential menstrual products by providing free period supplies to those in need.
Period Pantry was founded to address the critical lack of access to these products in underserved communities. We currently operate one location, but we are actively working to expand by partnering with like-minded individuals and organizations. Together, we aim to open more pantries in key areas, ensuring that more people can benefit from this vital resource.
With each step, we are creating a network of support to make menstrual products accessible to everyone who needs them.
